Research integrity and ethics

Research involving people, their data or their images is reviewed before it begins. We publish what our committees decide, except where the law or a confidence prevents it.

Ethical review

Every project that involves human participants, personal data, human tissue or identifiable images needs ethical approval before it starts. Low-risk projects are approved by a faculty’s ethics lead. Everything else goes to one of three committees, which report to the Research Committee of Senate:

The annual statement

Each year the University publishes a statement on research integrity, setting out how it supports good research practice and the investigations it has carried out into allegations of misconduct.

Raising a concern

Anyone who has a concern about the conduct of research at the University may raise it with the Named Person for research integrity, the Pro-Rector (Research), Professor Neil Ardern, in confidence. Concerns are handled under the University’s Procedure for Investigating Allegations of Research Misconduct.

For committee members

Members and secretaries of the University’s committees read their papers in the Committee Papers Service.
