The Treasury, the vaulted strongroom beneath the Old Schools built in 1724 to keep the Academy’s money and records, opened to the public on 14 and 15 September for the first time in eleven years. Visitors saw the Academy’s silver, the iron-bound chest in which its charters were kept until 1962, and the book recording the gift of 1,100 volumes with which the Library was founded in 1611.
The Treasury now holds the University’s plate and the most valuable items from the Library’s special collections, and is not normally open. Members of staff from the Library, the Archives and Security Services acted as guides. The University thanks the Night Wardens, who stayed on through both days.
